About our Australia Au Pair Nanny Jobs Abroad Programme

Experience Combining Work in Australia as an Au Pair / Nanny with the Ultimate Travel Experience.

The Au Pair in Australia programme is a fantastic way to combine work and travel. Whether you’re a first time traveller or an experienced one – this hassle free programme will allow you to become more than just tourist and experience the real Australia! As you will be living with a family and looking after their children, your work and accommodation will be organised before you leave, so you’ll know exactly where you are going and what you will be doing. This makes your Australian adventure a whole lot easier as all the important stuff will have already been taken care of, so when you depart you can just sit back and enjoy the ride!

What does the Au Pair / Nanny Australia Programme Involve?

As an Au Pair you will live with an Australian family and provide up to 45 hours of childcare per week. Your exact schedule will depend on the ages of the children you are looking after and will be arranged with your family once your placement has been confirmed. For example, if you are working with school aged children it is likely that you will get them ready for school and take care of them when they return, so your free time is likely to be during the day. Whereas if you are looking after pre-school children or babies your free time is more than likely going to be in the evening when the parents return. Whatever your schedule, you will not be expected to work more than 10 hours per day and no more than 5 ½ days per week, so there will be plenty of time to enjoy your new Australian lifestyle!

Au Pairs responsibilities normally include:

  • Waking the children and dressing, bathing and playing with them
  • Preparing meals for the children, tidying up after them, making their beds and washing their clothes
  • Driving the children to and from school or to other activities (thankfully in Oz they drive on the same side of the road!)
  • Helping with homework
  • Babysitting in the evenings when the parents are out

Benefits of being an Au Pair in Australia...

  • You get to experience the real Australia!
If you really want to get to know a country, you need to be where the tourists aren't, and there’s no better way to do this than becoming part of an Australian family. You’ll experience everyday life as an Australian joining in with their daily activities, weekend day trips and if you’re lucky sometimes even holidays! You’ll soon become accustomed to their laid back lifestyle, with consistently good weather and barbeques galore – you’ll be running about in your ‘thongs’ like a local in no time (don’t panic that’s just what they call flip flops!)

  • You are guaranteed work for 6 months!
Whilst the Working Holiday Visa allows you to work in Australia for up to 1 year, you can only work with a single employer for a total of 6 months. That’s why all of our placements are 6 months in duration. If you loved being an Au Pair there may be an opportunity for you to work with a new family after your inital placement finishes, or you can book onto one of our GET Australia packages and receive job support and help finding alternative work for the rest of your stay!

  • You get help and support throughout your entire stay!
As soon as you book onto the Au Pair in Australia programme you will receive our first class help and support. Before you even depart for Australia we are on hand to; guide you through your application, assist you with your Australian Working Holiday Visa, provide you with competitive flight quotes to Australia and most importantly find you your perfect Au Pair placement. Once you’re in Australia we’ll be there to; fully prepare you for your placement with a two day orientation, help you set up a bank account, ensure your travel to your host family is taken care of, provide you with a dedicated Au Pair Counsellor, put you in contact with other Au Pairs in your area and provide you with 24-hour emergency support and assistance throughout your entire placement!

  • You will earn up to $290 AUD per week, with all food and accommodation included!
That's about £700 or $1,000 USD per month! You will also receive an end of placement bonus of $500 AUD for completing your 6 month contract, so you can save up all your hard earned cash and then spend the rest of your time in Australia travelling and seeing the sites!

  • You get to choose where you want to work!
The Au Pair in Australia programme will do everything they can to find you your perfect nanny placement. You are encouraged to detail your preferences, so you get to choose the type of family you want to work with and the location you want to live in. We work with families all across Australia including Western Australia, South Australia, The Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The majority of our families live in the suburbs of popular cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns and Perth, but we also have families in the outback if you are looking to experience something totally different in a more remote location.

  • You get to travel in your time off and after your placement!
Australia is a back packers paradise! With some of the best beaches in the world; including Bondi Beach, Byron Bay and Surfers Paradise, as well some of the coolest cities like Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane to name a few – there’s so much to see and do! After your Au Pair placement finishes you will still have 6 months left on your Working Holiday Visa so you can continue work, or just take the time to relax and travel around the country.

Be more than just a tourist - become a local and experience the real Australia!

Your host Au Pair family...

Most of our familes employ an Au Pair to help with their busy lifestyles and take care of their children while they work. However, sometimes a parent may be present throughout the day and simply need an extra set of hands to help look after their kids. Our families love hiring international Au Pairs as it gives their children an insight into a different culture as well as allowing you a chance to experience theirs.

All of the families that we work with have been checked and interviewed by our team in Australia – so we know that you are going to have the best possible experience. The family is required to provide you with your own room, all meals, a weekly salary of up to $290 AUD and a bonus upon completion of your placement.

Our host families are looking for responsible, reliable and honest people who have childcare experience and enjoy spending time with children. They like Au Pairs who have hobbies and interests, so make sure you talk about these in your application. We will match you with a family whose needs match your experience and whose lifestyle you will feel comfortable with. Remember you get to choose the family that you are going to live with!

How does the Au Pair application and placement process work?

Once you have decided that you want to apply, head over to the Apply Now page and follow instructions. To give you a quick summary - you need to follow the links on this page to our GET Australia website, where you will "Book and Apply" onto the Au Pair in Australia package by submitting some basic details and paying £145 deposit (don't worry, this will be refunded in full if you are not accepted onto the programme)!

The application:
Once you have paid your deposit on our GET Australia website, you will be emailed an application form which you need to complete and submit as instructed. This application form and other resources will also be made available on your GET Australia online account, so make sure you keep hold of your login details. The application forms include questions about your childcare experience, work history, education, interests, hobbies and other personal information. Once your application has been received and approved, our office will get in touch to arrange a suitable time and date for your face-to-face interview. Please note our UK interviews are held in locations across London, Scotland, South East and Wales, so you may have to travel some distance to attend your interview.

The interview:
Interviews take place throughout the year, so you can apply whenever suits you! The interview itself will last about 2 hours and is a great opportunity for us to to find out about you and gain an understanding of what type of placement you are looking for. It's also a great opportunity for you to talk to someone face-to-face and get all of your questions, worries and concerns answered on the spot. If you don't already have one, your interviewer will also help you complete a Criminal Record Check (CRB). Please see Costs & What's Inc. for more information about the CRB fee, as well as other costs to consider.

Once you've been accepted:
Once you have been accepted onto the programme and your profile is complete, we will send your application over to our Sydney team who will work hard to find you your perfect host family. Our Sydney team will then create an online profile for you which will be entered into our fantastic online matching system and show off all your skills and experience. Whilst many of our families rely on our Sydney team to find them a suitable Au Pair, some prefer to log into our online system and select an Au Pair for themselves. Whichever way you are matched, the families will want to speak to you either on the phone or more commonly on Skype to ensure you are a good match for each other. Some matches will happen after one conversation, whilst others may take a bit of time. Either way you will have quite a bit of contact with your host family before you depart, so you will know exactly what to expect when you arrive!

We would advise you to apply about 4 to 6 months before you wish to depart, just so we have plenty of time to find you your perfect Au Pair placement. However, we are also able to find last minute placements and our turnaround time can be as quick as 4-6 weeks should you need it. Your exact departure date will depend on your host family’s requirements and will be determined once a placement has been accepted.

Please note: you are not required to make any additional payments to Au Pair in Australia until a placement has been confirmed. So you've got nothing to lose - what are you waiting? APPLY TODAY!

Child protection and safeguarding

Au Pair In Australia is committed to Child Protection and the Safeguarding of Children. We require all participants to understand that any inappropriate behaviour towards children in Australia will be reported to law enforcement authorities and the full force of the law will be brought to bear on perpetrators of abuse. We operate a Safer Recruiting policy and will require police checks, medical checks and other documents from you to support your application to our programme. Au Pair In Australia believes that children should never experience abuse of any kind and we are committed to work in a way that keeps Child Protection & Safeguarding at the centre of our practices and procedures.
